1 Peter 1:10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke of the grace that was to come to you, searched intently and with the greatest care, 11 trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when he predicted the sufferings of the Messiah and the glories that would follow. 12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you, when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things.
Yeah, I had time to go to a movie without my kids! On Thursday night, my wife and I went to see the latest movie starring Matt Damon. It's a novel spiritual thriller called, "The Adjustment Bureau".
In the movie The Adjustment Bureau is a group of angels whose job is to keep humanity "in the plan". When you deviate from "the plan", they make "adjustments". They are working in a very tall skyscraper in New York City in a multi-layered hierarchy that has "The Chairman" at the top. Fun movie in many respects and an interesting set of perspectives, though none are clearly Christian in their orientation.
I would say the God of The Adjustment Bureau is more akin to the God of deism--he has set things in motion. There's also a clear sense of predestination in the whole thing. The most important choice the people in the film make is not about eternal life or atonement--it's about who they are going to fall in love with and marry. Hollywood always seems to find this route to God when they make movies.
That's OK. If you don't mind some mild swearing by angels, you might enjoy The Adjustment Bureau. Maybe you won't like it at all. However, this movie brought me back to the passage in 1 Peter 1 listed above.
Peter tell us here that it is the experience of salvation and the blessings of life in Christ that the prophets foresaw and even angels long to understand more clearly. The next time you feel your life is a bit humdrum or that you don't feel "it" as you worship or pray or read the scriptures. Or the next time you feel like that opportunity you have to share the love of God with someone else seems a bit odd or humdrum, remember this--
Angels speculate and deeply desire to understand, see and experience what you are experiencing with God in Christ.
That's not a movie--that's the truth.
